Give me a little Trondheim
My post-arm-in-plaster treat and a way of getting back on the international travel saddle.
The wish for my local international airport BHX to go to some places I’m actually interested in has not come true as yet, but we decided to give Manchester a go. This is a Friday evening flight so we travelled up in the afternoon and enjoyed a coffee in Manchester just before the inevitable rain came. The airport experience was about 3 stars ***, about one more than my previous visit.
However, sunny Trondheim was waiting on the other side. Well, the next morning - we got in close to midnight having unknowingly walked across one of the city's sites, the Bridge of Flowers to get to our impressive hotel for the long weekend.
The breakfast lived up to its ‘best in Norway’ exclamation so we walked into the sunshine fully satisfied and slowly wandered towards the first of our coffees. Jacobsen & Svart we loved it so much that we went back on the last day for a very different, calm and relaxing weekday experience. Other coffees include a rare cappuccino at Kaffebrenneriet avd Dronningens gate where the loos was outside; you had to grab a key, walk out and around the corner into a little park, from where there is a gate going down some uneven curvy steps, into an outbuilding. I probably wouldn’t have bothered.
All this effort was followed by a walk around the university area and later, coffee at Bok & Bar, the glorious library cafe. Also inevitably one at Espresso House which is full of students on a Sunday when shops don’t open.
Dinners were Friday fish at Lokka on our doorstep and Bangkok Cafe.
The days were mainly spent walking around in the sunshine taking in the old town, and the harbour, including seeing the (reasonably) big cruise ship in for the day and very little shopping - in fact we bought not one thing, not even coffee beans. A highlight was Rockheim museum, on our doorstep and looking stunning from our hotel window. A great building and fantastically curated history of Norwegian pop with various brilliant interactive tools.
Trondheim is perfect for a long weekend. If only we could fly from Birmingham.
