Prague 2014 - The Quirks
The clichés
Yes it's old which makes it pretty, rather than beautiful.
And the alcohol really is cheaper than soft drinks. Thus rendering a relative two unit-a-month teetotaler like me useless at meal time. Even in the middle of the afternoon, I found myself picking s small beer or glass of wine with food rather than a mineral water or juice. When it's half the price, it's crazy not to.
On top of that, everything is ridiculously low-cost; steak meals for a tenner, cocktails in our 4* hotel to bring in our anniversary at midnight for £4. I spent less than £100 in 5 days.
Health & Safety
With all it's Starbucks, McDonald's and M&S, Debenhams etc, Prague only felt behind the 21st century when it came to H&S. I know that in the UK, we have over protective these days but I found it startling to see a man handing out of a third floor window without a harness or indeed any warning signs on the pavement so that passer-by knew that a body - or just a pot of pain - may fall on their head any minute.
Another odd sensation is having to do a run up to the escalator on the metro system as that's how fast they go. Some off them are so steep - an amazing feat - but they give me vertigo on top of the high speeds they move. It all works and the transport system is good, if you're prepared to do the run up. I'm not sure there was that much wheel chair access either.
Quirks
The final quirk is the graffiti. It's everywhere and seemingly accepted. We see these lovely buildings and even quality shops and hotels all with graffiti outside that no one is in a rush to clean. It's just an accepted part of culture whereas is we had anything like that happen at home a cleaning committee would be formed via Twitter and huge deal made of the clean up operation having to take place because of vandals.
It was a glorious, earn, August anniversary break for us though and thoroughly recommended, especially for those with families to feed.
