In the main, I ate much better in Auckland so I don’t know where the foodies go - I must have picked a couple of bad spots. We had a decent meal at Grill Meats Beer a few doors down from our hotel as the beloved just asked for a steak for his birthday dinner. After spending the day travelling - albeit it comfortably with glorious views or the Northern Explorer, we weren’t going to hunt around for an accolade-laden restaurant. That could wait for another day. But that day didn’t come. The menu at one across the road from us just didn’t fit  - the fine dining establishments tend to be meat-heavy which generally is not my thing.

I loved Rasa, the Malaysian/Indian across the street - see this is how small Wellington is, all the best places are a few minutes from our base. We even came across a public Diwali event to snack at and pick up some sweets to bring home.

We had some fine breakfasts from modern fayre Floriditas (another on our street) to a stack of pancakes at Victoria St Cafe (with the brilliant water tap) and even the Ugly Bagels at Wellington airport were fantastic.

The very first Wellington Flat White (as I sometimes see if called in Hong Kong) was enjoyed in Kaffee Eis along with a slice of Hummingbird cake. This used to be a fixture at the much-missed Brewsmith cafe near my home so bought back some good memories of that place.  Also good coffee experiences Brew Bar, Vivace, People’s Coffee and especially the syphon in Lamason. We also tried out the Mojo chain. Finally, we wrapped up a fine Wellington coffee experience just before we boarded the flight back to Auckland Three Quarters Society
